SEATTLE (September 19, 2016) — Gensler, the global design firm, announced today that Jacob Simons has joined their Seattle office as the director of design strategy. Jacob joins an established Practice Area that consists of design strategists, researchers, and experience designers who partner with notable clients such as Microsoft, Boeing, Ballmer Group, Redfin, Tableau, Brooks, Whitelaw Twining LC, and Antioch University to drive their most critical decisions around change, environment and user experience.
“Whether we are working or playing, learning or healing, seeking refuge or connecting with those we love, we crave interactions that ignite our spirit,” said Simons. “As a social scientist and designer, I am committed to improving the relationship between people and infrastructure.”
Prior to joining Gensler, Simons was the firm-wide experience design director at NBBJ where he built an internal consulting practice and provided leadership for their research, strategy, design, and change management efforts. His ability to think systemically and strategically has led to the development and implementation of award-winning products, environments, brands, and experiences for clients ranging from high-tech leaders and global retailers to leading healthcare organizations around the world. Clients include Google, Microsoft, Gates Foundation, Lego, Advisory Board, Amway, Kaiser Permanente, and Providence-Swedish.
At Gensler, Simons’ role will be to develop and facilitate strategic engagements with clients including process design, visioning, primary research, business strategy, experience design, and change management. With a commitment to elevating systems thinking and purpose-driven design, he will work across multiple studios, offices, and regions to integrate design strategy into projects and resolve the complex challenges facing Gensler’s clients.
“The addition of Simons will further strengthen our ability to deliver Clients data-driven design solutions that express their brand, anticipate their future, and deliver an experience aligned with their mission,” said Ryan Haines, principal-in-charge of design strategy & brand design. “We’re entering the next phase in our Design Strategy practice where we can offer our clients a fully integrated approach to co-developing and delivering solutions that address their most complex aspirational, cultural, and future-focused problems.”
In addition to his client work, Simons teaches, speaks, and partners with a national array of non-profits and institutions—such as Cornell University, NAEA (National Art and Education Association) and Ladybug House—to advance the dialogue around experience, strategy, design thinking, and creative confidence.
