Flad Architects, a national architecture practice with nine offices around the country, has promoted two members with its San Francisco office, Sylvia Darr and Joseph Marshall, to principal. The announcement was made by Bill Bula, Flad President.
Sylvia came to Flad in 2006 and has been a leader in the planning aspects of many science and technology projects. Thirty years of combined experience and training in both scientific research and architecture — she has a PhD in biochemistry, in addition to being a licensed architect — give Sylvia a unique perspective on the lab planning and design process. She understands scientists’ explicit and implied needs and is able to translate their requirements into efficient, considerate, and highly functional laboratory design. Her skills and insights have helped build many client relationships, contributing greatly to the stability and growth of Flad’s West Coast practice.
Joseph joined Flad in 2011 and has led many large-scale projects and has served the firm in numerous capacities. In 25 years of practice, Joseph has been involved in all aspects of architectural management and project delivery across many sectors of architectural work. Adept in the application of Integrated Project Delivery strategies and Lean Thinking with regard to sustainability and design, he recently completed a net-zero-energy government center as both project manager and lead designer. His projects have won numerous awards, both nationally and internationally, including: AIA Honor awards, National AIA/Healthcare Design Honors, IDSA Industrial Design Excellence award, Business Week Idea award, and the Dedalo Minosse Prize.
