Ball Janik LLP Signs 10-Year Lease at One Main Place, Signaling Law Firm’s Continued Commitment to Downtown Portland

PORTLAND, Ore.- Ball Janik LLP, a bi-coastal comprehensive services law firm focused on real estate, land use, construction, and business litigation, announced today that it has signed a lease renewal for a 17,348-square-foot, 10-year lease in its existing building, One Main Place, at 101 S.W. Main St. in downtown Portland. Signaling its continued commitment to being in the heart of downtown Portland, the firm will not only remain downtown for the long-term, but it will also move from the 11th floor up to the 18th floor, with new and fully transformed office space. Ball Janik was founded in 1982. An original tenant of the building, the firm moved into One Main Place in 1982. The downtown Portland office is conveniently located across the street from the Mark O. Hatfield federal courthouse and one block from Waterfront Park.

“We have deep roots in Portland and we are profoundly committed to our investment and growth in the City of Roses. Extending our lease, combined with reimagining our new office space in the building underscores our dedication to the city and to doing our part to revitalize downtown Portland,” said Jim Prichard, Ball Janik Managing Partner. “We are primed for growth and excited to attract new attorneys and staff to our beautiful, new Portland office. As our city emerges from the pandemic, we are still evaluating and determining our timeline and plans for the return to our Portland office, but we do know that we will transform our new space to maximize efficiencies, get rid of the big corner offices, create a more collaborative work environment for our clients and colleagues, and embrace a hybrid workspace. We are energized to be planning the physical reopening of the Portland office and excited to build on Ball Janik’s near 40-year tradition of excellent legal work.”

The firm’s new office will be a modern space that is designed to create a whole new workplace experience, with floor-to-ceiling windows and 360-degree views of Mount St. Helens, Mt. Hood and the Willamette River. It will feature right-sized offices, cutting edge technology to streamline workflow, open and collaborative workspaces, a community room, a wellness room and massage room. Ball Janik will move into its new 18th floor space in late November/early December 2021.

Ball Janik also announces today that Jim McDermott, Gabe Weaver, Ciaran Connelly, Dwain Clifford, along with valued paralegal Marilyn Stacey, are leaving to open a new boutique law firm, known as McDermott Weaver Connelly Clifford LLP (MWCC), focusing on complex commercial litigation and trial work.  MWCC is also investing in downtown Portland with new, innovative office space in the Broadway Building and by attracting future employees to the new firm.

MWCC will tap into its combined 70 years of Pacific Northwest expertise litigating a wide array of high stakes cases. The new firm will focus on business litigation for its current and new clients, unrestrained by any conflicting interests of existing Ball Janik clients.

“We wish MWCC all the best and we extend our gratitude for Jim McDermott’s many contributions over his 28 years with Ball Janik,” said Prichard.

Ball Janik and MWCC look forward to the opportunity to collaborate in the future.

Ball Janik will continue to strategically grow its industry leading land use, real estate, litigation, insurance, schools and public agency, and construction law practices.

“The future is bright for Ball Janik. We remain committed to Portland and to our role in shaping the downtown skyline of the city we love,” said Prichard.
