A mixed-use development in Tacoma is moving forward as construction is slated to begin sometime this year. The project, known as Aviva Crossing, is spearheaded by the property owner Tacoma Housing Authority and is planned to bring hundreds of apartments to the city. According to a report from the Puget Sound Business Journal, groundbreaking on the first building in the planned development is anticipated to take place this year.

Located at 1620 S Mildred St., Aviva Crossing is situated within James Center North, a commercial center positioned at the intersection of 19th and Mildred and across from both the Tacoma Community College campus and Pierce Transit Center. The site is within walking distance of retail, finance and various other services as well as several schools. James Center North spans 6.92 acres across five parcels, with 62,000 square feet of commercial retail space that is 52 percent occupied.

“JCN Aviva Crossing is within a Community Crossroads Center, as designated by Pierce County and the City of Tacoma,” according to THA’s website. “This will promote opportunity for a mix of uses and housing types with connections to recreational, cultural, and environmental amenities.”

According to THA’s website, the project plans include 600 future units, 30,000 square feet of commercial retail space and 13 commercial tenants. The project will ultimately help to serve Tacoma Community College, which sees more than 14,000 students a year. The PSBJ report shows that other members of the development team include KOZ Development and Mercy Housing Northwest.

Established in 1940, Tacoma Housing Authority is dedicated to providing housing and supportive services, according to the organization’s website. THA develops and manages real estate and provides rental housing as well as owns and manages a varied portfolio of properties, such as multifamily properties, single-family homes and properties the group uses for business purposes. THA’s residential properties total more than 1,300 units.
