Skylab’s New Portland HQ: A Convergence of Design, Community, and Sustainability

In the heart of Portland, Oregon, a remarkable transformation has taken place, setting a new benchmark for office and communal spaces. Skylab Architecture, a firm that has long been a part of Portland’s design fabric, outgrew its downtown premises and embarked on a quest for a new headquarters that would not only accommodate its growing needs but also serve as a beacon for the art and design community. The result is a groundbreaking space in the Northwest Industrial area that blurs the lines between work, community, and environmental engagement.

After a meticulous three-year search, Skylab settled on a unique triangle-shaped corner lot, a decision that would shape the future of the firm and its relationship with the community. The lot, housing two steel buildings from the mid-1940s and an adjacent yard, was transformed into a 10,000-square-foot complex that pays homage to its industrial roots while embracing modernity and sustainability.

The redesign of these semi-cylindrical, prefabricated steel warehouses is a testament to Skylab’s commitment to preserving architectural heritage while injecting innovative design principles. The firm’s approach retained the buildings’ iconic arching roof forms, enhancing them with new glazing to connect the interior spaces with the urban and natural landscape. A significant feature is the expanded 60-foot skylight, which bathes the workspace in natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and highlighting the firm’s dedication to energy efficiency.

The interior of the Skylab HQ is a marvel of industrial chic, combined with natural elements that promote a sense of well-being and creativity among its occupants. From the full kitchen and dining room to the listening lounge and 3D print space, every aspect of the design encourages collaboration and innovation. The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and the incorporation of 15-foot-tall trees into the workspace reflect Skylab’s vision of integrating nature into the built environment, fostering a healthy and inspiring work atmosphere.

Beyond serving as an office, Skylab HQ is envisioned as a dynamic community hub, featuring garden spaces, outdoor meeting areas, and a 300-person event venue. These spaces not only cater to the firm’s employees but also open up to designers, artists, and the public, facilitating connections through events, performances, and discussions. The inclusion of sports courts and fire pits further enhances the site’s appeal as a versatile and inclusive gathering place.

A cadre of esteemed collaborators joined forces with Skylab to bring the innovative vision to life. 2.ink Studio lent its expertise in landscape architecture, creating an integration of lush garden spaces that promote both environmental sustainability and communal engagement. Civil engineering solutions were crafted by Humber Design Group Inc., ensuring that the project not only stood on solid ground but also harmonized with its urban surroundings. Structural integrity and innovative engineering solutions were the domain of Valar Consulting Engineering, whose work underpinned the ambitious architectural designs. Jacobs played a crucial role in the mechanical design and build aspect, implementing systems that optimize energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Finally, the construction vision was brought to reality by Lorentz Bruun, a general contractor who ensured every element of the design was executed as designed.

Under the leadership of Jeff Kovel and his team, Skylab Architecture has not only created a new home for itself but also a vibrant, sustainable space that serves as a model for future workplace and community designs.
