Safeway Begins Process for Redeveloping Upper Queen Anne Store

Existing 25,000 Sq. Ft. Store to Expand to Meet Community Needs; 3-4 Stories of Multi-Family Housing Slated to be Added Above

Seattle, WA – June 28, 2017 — Popular supermarket chain Safeway (www.safeway.com) today announced plans to redevelop its upper Queen Anne grocery store, including doubling the store’s existing 25,000 sq. ft. footprint and adding multi-family housing above. The project design will focus on neighborhood integration, and enhancing the street-level character of the Queen Anne Avenue location.

Located at 2100 Queen Anne Ave. N. in Seattle’s upper Queen Anne neighborhood, the project will feature a new 50,000 sq. ft. store designed to provide an updated look and feel with expanded departments within the store, and a larger selection of the fresh, local and organic products to meet customer needs. Local firm Holland Partner Group has been selected as the project developer.

“Our upper Queen Anne store opened on this very location fifty-five years ago—and we’ve focused on providing the best quality and selection to meet the needs of our Queen Anne customers ever since,” said Karl Schroeder, Safeway’s Seattle Division President.

“We love being a part of this neighborhood. Since 1962 the store has undergone several significant remodels that were limited to our current space constraints. We are now committed to pursuing a redevelopment plan well-suited to both our neighbors and the location,” continued Schroeder. “We know how important this store redevelopment will be to the neighborhood and are taking a thoughtful approach to building design and materials.”

The expanded Safeway store will offer more premium elements tailored to the Northwest, while addressing current size constraints that have resulted in a crowded store during peak hours and a limited ability to offer full product selections.

The development includes plans to add four-stories of multi-family housing above the grocery store. The team will start the entitlement process this summer and anticipates beginning construction in the fall of 2018. Ankrom Moisan is the project architect and other members of the design team will be added soon.
