LMN Architects Celebrates Completion of The Buxton Center for Bainbridge Performing Arts

A new era for the performing arts has arrived on Bainbridge Island, Washington, with the completion of The Buxton Center by LMN Architects. This state-of-the-art cultural space represents a transformative project for the island’s creative community, fostering stronger connections and offering an immersive experience for performers and audiences alike.

The Buxton Center welcomes visitors with a two-story lobby featuring a wood and glass curtain wall, seamlessly blending the interior with the surrounding natural landscape. This transparency extends to the plaza outside, inviting passersby to glimpse the vibrant activity within. Inside, a flexible studio serves as a dedicated space for the Bainbridge Performing Arts Theatre School, while the fully renovated auditorium boasts improved acoustics, sightlines, and accessibility.

Sustainability was a key focus throughout the design process. Natural tones and materials celebrate the island’s unique character, and locally sourced reclaimed timber adds a touch of history and environmental responsibility. The Center even features a rooftop solar array and an expanded rain garden, demonstrating its commitment to eco-friendly practices.

“The Buxton Center is a vital part of Bainbridge Island’s cultural fabric,” says Julie Adams, partner at LMN Architects. “This renovation renews a treasured island institution that will continue to support local arts organizations and their patrons for years to come.” Mark Tumiski, principal at LMN Architects, adds, “The roof and ceiling plane echoes the region’s architectural vernacular and is expressive of the building program. We took advantage of the scale and tectonic identity of the original structure and leveraged the dynamic environmental qualities of sun, rain, and views that define Bainbridge Island to design a building that respects both the site and the local arts culture.”

Elizabeth Allum, executive director at The Buxton Center, expresses her gratitude: “This incredible renovation and expansion signifies not only a physical transformation but also a renewed commitment to our mission of fostering creativity and building community.”

This project adds to LMN Architects’ reputation for designing smart, sustainable spaces contributing to thriving communities. With a portfolio that includes projects like Marion Oliver McCaw Hall and the Seattle Asian Art Museum, LMN Architects has had several opportunities to shape the cultural landscape of Washington and beyond.

The Buxton Center’s grand opening was a resounding success, attracting nearly 1,000 attendees eager to experience this transformative space. With its commitment to artistic excellence, inclusivity, and sustainability, The Buxton Center is poised to become a vibrant hub for the arts on Bainbridge Island for years to come.
