A 33-story residential tower is joining Horizon House’s First Hill campus in Seattle. The new addition will consist of 202 independent-living units and coexist alongside the existing four buildings located at 900 University St., according to a report from the Puget Sound Business Journal. Mithun, an architectural firm based in Seattle, has been entrusted with the design responsibilities while Andersen Construction will oversee the construction of the expansion project for the campus, which spans almost 900,000 square feet. The upcoming high-rise structure will encompass 500,000 square feet and will also feature underground parking facilities.

The construction management for the overall project, which encompasses upgrades to various sections of the existing campus such as activity, dining, and back-of-house areas, is being handled by Westlake Consulting Group LLC, according to the report. Abbott Construction has been selected to carry out these upgrades. The plan is to commence construction in late 2025 or early 2026, with a projected completion date of 2029.

“While many senior living communities construct new buildings, only a few can seamlessly integrate them into a unified campus,” Horizon House CEO Mike Ostrem said in the report.

In the new tower, the apartments are slated to feature upscale finishes. Community amenities will include ground-level and rooftop amenity spaces and communal terraces for social gatherings and resident gardenings. Part of the design also includes panoramic views of the downtown skyline and mountains in all directions.

Horizon House, a nonprofit independent living community, originally opened its doors in 1961, according to the group’s website. At its First Hill campus, the organization offers independent living apartments as well as resident-driven activities. The group also offers assisted living for those who need assistance with the daily activities of living and memory support for those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
