Thriving Communities Walking Tour: Yesler Redevelopment (Seattle)
July 10 @ 2:30 am - 6:00 pm PDT
When was the last time you walked through Yesler Terrace? If it’s been a while, it’s time to reintroduce yourself—or perhaps meet this dynamic, growing neighborhood for the first time.
Join the ULI Northwest Thriving Communities Committee for a reintroduction of Yesler to the city at large. Poised at the intersection of history and change, the mixed-use, mixed-income redevelopment of Yesler is bringing positive transformation for Seattle Housing Authority residents and new residents to downtown Seattle.
Faced with failing infrastructure, public safety issues, and the deterioration of existing housing built in the 1940’s, the redevelopment of Yesler galvanized around a central question: with the benefit of a blank slate, how might we go about creating an open, inviting neighborhood that allows people from many different backgrounds to come together with a shared sense of identity? A significant network of new public spaces, designed to knit this transit-oriented neighborhood into its established urban context, served as the ultimate catalyst for public and private development opportunities, creating spaces for new and former residents to call home.
The afternoon begins with a short panel discussion to set the context and history of this major infrastructure project, followed by a guided walking tour of the Yesler neighborhood, which includes a new public park and the first market-rate building.
