Clean Energy Firm First Mode Opens +40,000 SQFT Factory in Seattle’s SoDo District

First Mode, a global decarbonization product company founded and headquartered in Seattle, has opened one of the largest clean technology manufacturing facilities in the city, in the SoDo District, according to an announcement from the company. The 40,000-square-foot factory will produce components to retrofit up to 150 massive ultra-class mining trucks annually into low-carbon or zero-emission electric vehicles. As each truck is about the size of a three-story building, the impact of First Mode’s retrofit product line is equivalent to removing 90,000 passenger vehicles from the road each year. Starting with mining and rail haulage, First Mode’s category-defining hybrid, battery, and hydrogen fuel cell retrofit products provide heavy industry a pathway to eliminate their diesel emissions. Because heavy industry sources, moves, and transforms the critical minerals fueling the clean energy economy of tomorrow, the time is now to develop, manufacture, and scale products that enable its decarbonization.

“Washington is at the forefront of innovation in clean energy. First Mode’s advanced technology will enable more industries to phase out fossil fuels and cut air pollution, and I’m proud they’re opening a manufacturing facility in Seattle,” Washington State Governor Jay Inslee said in a news release.

First Mode develops and manufactures decarbonization solutions for heavy industry partners dedicated to the clean energy future. With a product mix of vehicle retrofits that enable diesel hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell systems, we accelerate mining and rail fleets on their path to zero. Our full solutions suite, including infrastructure and haulage systems innovations, proves decarbonization is possible even in constrained environments – for people and planet.
