Adidas offers employees more space to connect and engage on Portland campus
Seattle, WA (May 15, 2020) – PCL Construction recently completed a large two-phased renovation on the campus of the adidas North American headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Due to the exponential growth of their workforce on the Portland campus, expanded dining and flexible gathering space was greatly needed. Adidas engaged PCL in a design-build relationship to streamline the delivery process. PCL partnered with Hacker Architects to design the complex expansion and addition.”
The project, which took two years to complete, provides vital space and connectivity to the adidas Village. The first phase constructed The Canteen, a 9,000-square-foot space that serves as the main kitchen and dining area for employees. The second phase built a new 18,000-square-foot, three-story structure called The Intersection, which physically joins two existing buildings and serves as a flexible space for both overflow seating from The Canteen as well as comfortable areas for informal collaboration and even large all-company meetings.
As a prominent thoroughfare for primary circulation paths and foot traffic for adidas Village,The Intersection also features an outdoor plaza where the iconic adidas “Superstar Shoes” sculpture now resides.
“Over the past two years I have had the pleasure of working with PCL and Hacker Architects to bring The Intersection project to life,” said David Remos, director, corporate real estate for adidas America, Inc. “What started out as a simple but clear list of values, opportunities, and project goals has evolved into a space that is already alive and breathing ‘Three Stripe Life’.”
An additional goal of this project was to help adidas utilize existing space on its campus rather than expand its footprint. This meant building between, and on top of, existing structures.
Remos discussed the complexity of working on an occupied, active campus, “Continuing the evolution of our North American headquarters here in Portland, The Intersection project performed structural gymnastics that I have never seen before from a building. The team’s ability to successfully maneuver into a nearly zero-laydown site and build this amazing structure, all while minimally disrupting the heart of our campus for 24 months is a testament to their foresight, planning, leadership, and commitment to all those around them.”
Both phases of the project have been recognized as by the Oregon Daily Journal of Commerce. The Canteen won second place in the tenant improvement category in 2019; and The Intersection has been nominated as a Top Project, with the event to be held in August.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with adidas and help deliver a transformative project on their campus,” said Aaron Wiehe, vice president and district manager of PCL’s Seattle office. “This project presented unique challenges that allowed our dynamic project team to be creative and strategic in our approach as we found ways to deliver value to adidas.”
