Rick Fedrizzi to Leave U.S. Green Building Council

The Registry received news of Rick Fedrizzi leaving USGBC. Below is the letter he sent out announcing his departure.

Dear USGBC Community,

When we started USGBC 22 years ago, I don’t think any of us could have imagined the organization would become what it is today. We set out to simply build better buildings, but we quickly learned that in doing so, we were changing the world. The success we’ve enjoyed has been made possible because of our shared vision, common values and unwavering commitment to a prosperous, more sustainable future. It’s been an extraordinary journey we’ve undertaken together.

To that end, I have some news I’d like to share. Earlier today, I advised the USGBC Board of Directors that I will be stepping down as CEO at the end of the 2016 calendar year, paving the way for a leadership transition that would take place in January 2017.

As you know, I have always focused on making sure we have a stellar leadership team in place, and that we have an equally strong bench for the future. Our programs are thriving, our structure has evolved to support our global growth and influence, and our financials are in excellent shape. USGBC has reached a point in its maturity where I feel comfortable making this decision, knowing that I will continue to contribute to the ongoing trajectory of the green building movement as a volunteer in any way I can.

The Board has already set up a search committee to identify candidates for the CEO position. The goal is to complete the process in a timely way so that I have sufficient time to work with that individual to insure a smooth transition and continuity of leadership.

Since co-founding USGBC, serving as its volunteer founding chair the first six years, then being appointed president and CEO in 2003, green building has become a global movement. The best part of my job has always been seeing the impact that LEED and the greater USGBC community have made on the global green building industry.

As I look back on my time at USGBC, I see how far we have come and I look forward to seeing what will be accomplished because of the passion and expertise of people like you.

I learn from all of you—you each inspire me every day, and with such a strong foundation, I look forward to many successes for USGBC in the years ahead.
